GLAUCOMA

glaucoma-1Glaucoma is a disease affecting the optic nerve, the bundle of nervous fibres that transmits the electrical impulses, derived from visual stimuli, to the brain, and is caused by a continuous rise in intraocular pressure.
In the eye suffering from glaucoma the drainage of the aqueous humour is hampered: the fluid accumulates and the intraocular pressure begins to rise.
After some time a compression or a squashing of the optic nerve is produced, damaging and leading to death the nervous fibres. The lesion of the optic nerve translates into a progressive alteration in the visual field, that tends to progressively narrow, up to its complete disappearance.
